Nervous Patients » Sedation & Dental Phobia
Is there anything that can help me with my fear of the dentist?
Yes. Some people are so frightened of the dentist that they will not go for dental treatment. Only attending when they have an emergency and are in pain. This is the worst time to meet your dentist for the first time.
Modern dentistry is amazing, hi tech, artistic and beautiful! Moreover, for those of you with a nervous disposition, painless! This can only be achieved by developing a rapport and trust with your dentist.
The best way to start overcoming either a previous bad experience or an irrational fear of the dentist is to come along for an examination, and meet the friendly staff and your understanding, friendly dentist. A seat in his relaxing chair and a tour around your mouth with a gentle intra-oral camera - just to have a look! You will be able to view your own teeth, gums and mouth on the big screen and see what your dentist is seeing. This is the beginning of the process of putting you on the right path.
Many patients, once they have taken the first step of booking an appointment, and then having their first examination are usually happy and relieved that it was such a pleasant experience.
The secret is to allow time, to have an unhurried, relaxed visit, to be able to ask questions and to have them answered by our dentist who understands nervous patients, since he was once one himself!
Dr. Stander prides himself not only on his clinical expertise, but equally in converting a nervous patient into a relaxed patient who attends regularly.
At Stander Dental Care, our philosophy is ‘prevention is better than cure’. Regular visits are absolutely necessary to develop the trust and confidence needed to nurture a strong patient/dentist relationship.
What is sedation?
For those patients who need a little extra help with their first few visits, we offer oral sedation, or ‘happy pills’. This will take away any anxiety and aid the feeling of relaxation.
